- Choose the Right Thickness

There are three options to choose from; ¾ inch, 1¼ inch and 1½ inch. You should get either of the first two options, because the 1½ inch option is actually two ¾ inch pieces glued together. If you get the latter option, those slabs will create trouble later on, mainly because the glue will start disintegrating, which will create gaps along the seams and will increase the likelihood of your counters getting surface damage.

- Choose the Right Color


There’s more to the color of granite slab than you know! Lighter color slabs can get stained pretty quickly, not a good idea if you have a lot of clumsy spillers in the house. It’s best to choose a darker color with fewer patterns if you have a lot of people using the kitchen. Otherwise, go nuts with color and complex textures.

- Check the Seams

The slabs you get should have as few seams as possible. Unsightly seams can ruin even the most expensive granite since they’ll become the focal point whenever you look at the countertops. Save yourself the annoyance and just check the seams when you buy them.

- Sink that Sink


This is more when you actually get the slabs and are having them installed. Take the opportunity to have the kitchen sink under-mounted into the slab for a more stable look. Top mount sinks don’t just allow bacteria to collect round the edges but might also ruin the overall look of the countertop.

- Give it the Right Finish

From the three finishes – honed, leather and polished – choose one that suits your kitchen’s overall theme. Honing will basically cut away the shine, giving your counters a matte look. Leather finishing makes your counter seem more textured, whereas a polished finish gives your counter that glossy, smooth, buttery finish.
